Language Market

19th December 2017 marked the culmination of a synergic effort on the part of all the language teachers at Cospicua Middle School. The school hall was one colourful collage of cultures representing the languages taught at the school: Maltese, English, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Arabic and Chinese. Students with tokens in hand visited the various stalls to sample gastronomical delights from various countries, such as but certainly not limited to: penne al pesto and pannettone on the Italian stand, wontons, dumplings, spring rolls and prawn crackers on the Chinese section, ħobż biż-żejt and stuffed olives on the Maltese stall, and hummus and imqaret on the Arabic stand. All the while, dance students in costume performed traditional dances on stage to the delight of schoolmates sampling food in the dining area that was set up for the occasion, teachers, LSAs and other visitors.

The aim behind this activity was to promote cultural diversity especially on the threshold of 2018 European Year of Culture. During lessons preceding this event, teachers worked with students in cross-curricular and cross-cultural initiatives to raise students’ awareness of cultural diversity and richness. Afterwards students had the opportunity to reflect on and discuss the importance and implications of the activity.

The Language Market at Cospicua Middle School featured recently on local television, including interviews with the Head of School Ms Charmaine Elshout and various student representatives.
